Dr. Radek Skarnitzl
Implicit Socio-psychological Attitudes to Speech
Presenter CV

Dr. Radek Skarnitzl is an eminent Czech linguist. He is currently the head of Institute of phonetics at Charles University in Prague. His principal interests include two areas lying between phonetics and other sciences. The first one is examining ways of identifying the speaker from the speech signal (forensic phonetics). The second area covers various aspects related to foreign accents, mostly Czech English. Apart from determining what actually constitutes Czech English and what its phonetic properties are, he is interested in the effect of the presence of specific pronunciation features on the evaluation of the speaker by listeners in communication. Apart from these areas, he also investigates acoustic and articulatory properties of Czech, using (among others) electropalatography. Prof. Dr. Volker Dellwo
The relationship between indexical and linguistic properties in speech perception
Presenter CV

Prof. Dr. Volker Dellwo is a distinguished professor of phonetics at the University of Zurich. Most of his research has focused on speaker-specific (indexical) information in the speech signal and how humans and machines can use such information to recognize individuals. He has developed the idea that measurable rhythmic patterns of speech vary strongly between different speakers and that such between-speaker variability can either contribute to the automatic identification of speakers and can be meaningful in forensic phonetic speaker comparisons. He is going to talk about "The relationship between indexical and linguistic properties in speech perception" in the International Conference on Laboratory Phonetics and Phonology (ICLPP) in Tehran, Iran.
